The day is getting closer when all the SHAG's (SchmidtsHackersAndGiesens) will again meet for our winter gathering that has almost turned to spring. We wanted (as the mothers to the shags) to sit down and write a little bit of our rich history for you, we want you to know your heritage, we want you to know how much you are all loved.
It started way back in 1972 after Carol (Moore) had moved with her family from St. Louis Park to Green Isle, MN. She went to 8th grade in GI and in 9th came on over to what was then known as the home of the Arlington-GI high school and the A-GI Indians. Being the lockers were assigned alphabetically, fate had it that with the names Meyer and Moore, the lockers that housed our educational treasures were nearly side by side. It wasn't long before we made a bond that would forever hold. We talked and talked and then when we got home we would call each other on the phone and talk some more. Carol had what was called a "party line" back then, so nothing could be shared that couldn't be shared with all! Our parents couldn't quite figure out what we had to talk about since we had just spent the entire day together!! Her phone number I still remember 326-7034 and she remembers mine 964-5195. We spent 9th and 10th grade without the third piece of our puzzle - Robin. She was going to school in Gaylord home of the Gaylord Spartans. Carol and I signed up for classes at the Sibley County Vocational School (which was housed at the fairgrounds) in 1976 our junior year. The class was called "model office" and was quite state of the art back then. We liked it so much (along with a few other things we liked i.e. the Gaylord BOYS who came over for small engines or auto shop) that we signed up again for our senior year. Unbeknown to us at the time Robin was also signing up for her junior year at model office, and we would meet her at this time. She recalls not liking us at all when she first saw us - Carol and I had already known some people from Gaylord. Being a year older than Robin, we could drive and we often checked out their main streets along with Arlington's main street which we referred to as "cruisin' main". "Cruisin' Main was a process where you made a U-turn just before the railroad tracks and drove the four blocks back to the gas station and made a U-turn through their lot. People came from surrounding towns to cruise our main and it was a long parade of cars up and back, up and back for hours on end. I can't remember exactly when Robin's "dislike" became "like" but we soon became fast friends and the three of us could not be separated. Our senior year was spent with Robin and other friends, all from Gaylord. Some of the details from these years have long been forgotten, but what we do we recall is that we were always there for each other even way back then. Our fights were few and forgiveness was fast, our love of life was contagious! Carol and Robin moved in together first, approximately summer of 1979 after Robin graduated. They shared the first floor of a big old house on Highway 5 that is now "This Old House". When a church bought the house they moved out and moved above Morriems Drug Store apartments until they moved out one by one and got married. During this time I lived in Mankato and then in Arlington in the town houses down on 7th street until I was married.
Emily was our first born baby - and it was truly felt that she belonged to ALL of us. Robin and Carol were right there with us, our first outing after bringing her home was the Oktoberfest in GI. It was 24 years later when Emily had the first grand baby and Robin and Carol were right there with us... celebrating life.
Now it is 9 years and 7 more babies later and we are still celebrating and loving life with all of you.
When we were young mothers we gathered together often. We gathered at each others houses, our parents houses, the Sibley County Fair, Flandrau State Park, Henderson State Park, actually all over is where we gathered! Remember the time on Carol and Du's farm when the baby pigs were being born? Your dads became friends also, making it perfect for all of us. We were family. Many many times... I only wish we would have kept track of all of our times together - who would have ever thought? Now that we are all grandmothers, we continue to "gather" when ever we can.
In approximately 1992 we started what was known back then as a winter vacation. Grandpa Moose started it and our first SHAG family outing was to the "Thunderbird Motel" in Mpls. Since that time we have tried to go each winter. The last two winters it has been only the adults. We also for many years - went to Tofte in the summer with all of our families. Then it was Grand Marais for three years when Nick was living there. Robin has most of these dates journaled and one day we will sit down and compile all her information so it is down in our history. These were all such special times, any time we were together - it was family. We often joked that we wished we could have a big ole farm place with lots of houses on that we could all "live together" and help each other.
Robin was to be the organizer and the keeper of records.
Carol was going to do the shopping and crafting.
I was going to be in charge of the cleaning.
We changed these jobs from time to time in our imagination as we would laugh and talk about life. One of the favorite changes was when we were going to buy the big house next to Robin and Al. There is a beauty shop on the side - so we thought Duane could go to school to be a barber and we could call it "Duey's Do's", then Grannie was going to bake pies, Carol was going to run a clothing shop, and I believe I was going to do massage... we were laughing so hard - just us three on our back patio (Veranda) - you would have thought we would soon need medical help! I believe in my heart that our friendship is what has made life so special, what has made our families so special...
we always had each other.
The year we turned 50 Carol found three pairs of yellow boots, at this time we decided rather than be like everyone else and be a red hatter or a pink hat lady we would be the YELLOW BOOTZIES.
In the last years, a new tradition began and the name SHAG was formally assigned to our clan. This does include Doris and Jeff (Meyer) so in actuality, we could be the SHAGeMs.
Year one: CRAZY HAT (1/30/10)
Year two: CRAZY SOCKS (2/12/11)
Year three: CRAZY PAJAMA (2/25/12)
Now we are on year four and we will celebrate the 23rd of March, 2013...
CRAZY CLASH BASH.
Some things we have learned along the way we would like to share with you, the children shags, and the grandchildren shags. (Now each yellow bootzie girl is a grandma!)
1. We hope everyone thinks we are as funny as we think we are ( our NewYears toast in 2010) has now become our toast every year. Pam Carol and Robin
2. Promptness shows respect - Robin has always been the prompt one, the organizer of the paper work. She is the one who keeps track of details.
3. Shop the sale isles - Carol is our shopper and gift giver. She makes each event special with
her ideas and craftiness.
4. Keep laughter on the front burner always - Pam is the one who most likes to laugh, and enjoys
laughing with the yellow bootzie families.
5. It is better to sing off key than to not sing at all.
6. Be fair. Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be generous. Respect others.
7. What ever your passion is - pursue it as if your days are numbered, because they are.
8. Life is a series of events that sometimes require us to dig deep and let go. Let go of hurt, anger
sadness and insecurity. It will not always be easy but do it anyway.
9. You can't please everyone, dont try... follow Christ and please Him - others will then follow.
10. Don't miss your life by looking for the big events, the mountain top experiences - enjoy the
small things, the sunsets, company of family and good friends, laughter, green grass, the feel
of water washing over your skin after mowing the lawn on a hot summer day, the warmth of
your home after shoveling snow in March... all these small events - don't miss them - they are
what will make you who you will become.
11. Always listen, learn the skill early in life. Sometimes people don't need you to fix anything they
just need you to hear their heart.
12. Practice unconditional love. Parental love...
- the kind of love you feel is different than any other love, it changes who you are just
as each one of you changed who we are. You are all loved unconditionally with a love that can
never be described only felt with the heart. And, do not forget to let others know of the love
you have for them. You may not have the chance to tell them tomorrow
13. Everyone on the face of the earth makes mistakes, we are all human. There is nothing in life
that is perfect, only moments that you decide are the best will stay with you. Jesus is perfect...
His love is unconditional, follow Him, allow forgiveness to yourself and to others always. As
He forgave us so must we forgive others.
14. Learn to care. Do not be afraid of the responsibility that comes with caring for other people.
What we do for love will endure forever, even if the people you do it for don't.
15. It may not always feel like it, but life is a Blessing.
16. Be thankful for unanswered prayers ... there is a reason that the unanswered prayer didn't come to fruition and it is usually because there is a better answer coming for your prayer.
17. Let them take pictures of you ... you may never look younger than you do right now.
These are just a few "thoughts" for your 2013 letter. When we think of a song written by Martina McBride - it brings to mind what we want you to gain this year from your rich family history. (words changed by the bootzie's)
IT IS THROUGH YOUR EYES THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SEE THE FUTURE
WE CAN SEE THE REFLECTION OF WHO WE ARE AND WHO YOU WILL BE
YOU HAVE ALL GROWN NOW AND HAVE LEFT OUR HOMES
MANY OF YOU ARE RAISING FAMILIES OF YOUR OWN.
AND SOMEDAY WHEN WE ARE GONE
WE HOPE YOU WILL SEE THE REFLECTION WE SEE IN YOU
HOW HAPPY YOU HAVE MADE ALL OF US
HOW VERY MUCH YOU ARE ALL LOVED, UNCONDITIONALLY, FOREVER...
CONTINUE -
AS WE WILL LIVE ON THROUGH YOU.
EVEN WHEN SCHEDULES GET IN YOUR WAY...
CONTINUE THE TRADITION, THE LOVE FOR EACH OTHER THAT WE STARTED.
NEVER STOP CARING ABOUT EACH OTHER
NEVER LET ANGER OR HURT STOP YOU FROM LOVE
AND WHILE WE ARE STILL ALL HERE TOGETHER -
LAUGH WITH US, AS WE STILL THINK WE ARE AS FUNNY, AS WE THINK WE ARE!!
...and so, the SHAGeMs all met today! It was a great time with family and we are so happy. I will blog the actual gathering soon, but wanted to get this posted now that you know it is here for your enjoyment.
With much love,
The Yellow Bootzies and their soon to be "double nickles"!!
Oh, my, how we love you all! Thanks for the good time!

The hands of time
She soundly sleeps against the warmth of gramma love.
Her sweet innocence of birth still fresh.
You touch her baby skin and feel the strength of it against your weakness.
Was it really that long ago that your momma held you and sang sweetly?
The hands of time turning together to make moments into memories.
Hush little baby don't you cry...
Your gramma's going to sing you a lullaby.
PaPa turns 54!
Carol and Duane, Robin and Al came over also for the dinner celebration.
I know, it is hard to believe but we had ALOT of good food!
We had chili, roasted veggies, hummus dip on little toasts with bascotti to top it off, cookies from a tin, chips, dips...
but most of all we had a wonderful time together!
Jordyn found papa's hole in his sock. She would go up and touch his toe and look at him sweetly...
"your little piggie is getting out" -
And that is what I take from this moment...
If you get a hole in your sock,
make sure you have a little girl to watch your piggies.
Thank-you everyone who was at the celebration in person or in prayer....
We love you all!
My name is Nola Jean
Sometimes just to hear her little voice I will say "hello there my little sweet pea, hello my little lady bug" and she will say...
"my names not sweet pea, I'm not lady bug...my name is Nola Jean... remember"

The mirror
Once a farm girl, always a farm girl! Sept 3rd 2012 |
LIndsey's baby shower, November 2nd 2012 |
baby farm girl summer 1934 |
It is there
light grey streaks highlighting the black that she was born with
...and sure enough, there is a few wrinkles that weren't there the last time she really looked.
Inside the body ( that houses two artificial knees and one shoulder - the other one not moving as it should and skin itching that you don't want to itch...)
there is this 30 year old - the one who held her babies close with a love that would never run out.
It seems love doesn't age the way the body does
It renews itself each day as she look back and can see with eyes of love all she have given life to
and she closes her eyes to the mirror and lets the Spirit of the risen Christ give wings to her life.
HAPPY 79th!

September 2012 - 1st day of school
This is the first day of school for Jaci Anna and Conner Dallas. It was September 6th 2012. JaciAnna is in third grade and Conner Dallas is in kindergarten.
I pray you will learn and grow this year in God's love.
that He will keep you safe and protect your mind against the things of the world.
Lord, I place them all in You. Please always be in their mind, that the only one who
would judge them would be you. They are your precious children made in Your image.
Praise God!
The Fathers hand
There have been many things through the years written about the "Fathers Hand". So I must reach into my heart and try to explain what this picture of the fathers hand did to my soul. I want it to be new words and yet I want it to have the depth of the history that Jesus left for us. I want for you to read my words and be touched in a part of your own soul that holds fear, or things that are uncomfortable and yet we hold on to them. It seems sometimes that few of us are able to easily talk about the things we cannot touch... even if the experience is commonplace like the birth of a baby, the miracle of life. When did we stop loving each other openly? When did we stop using the God of the Universe and the gift of the Cross as our way of explaining love to others?
This is the love of our Father
His hand protecting us, holding us.
When you feel His touch there is no turning back.
He holds your heart beat in the palm of His hand and your life is eternal in Him.
This is the love of our Father
His hand protecting us, holding us.
When you feel His touch there is no turning back.
He holds your heart beat in the palm of His hand and your life is eternal in Him.
Happy 79th Gramma Grape!
My mother will turn 79 on March 13th, 2013. It is hard for me to take in. When I was a little girl my mom had this picture of herself in her billfold. I remember looking at it one day and saying
"mom, where you a Mexican when you were a baby?".
Now when I look at the picture I remember our recent visit to the Dr. for what appeared to be the flu. It turned out the flu test came back negative... but the Dr. asked her " the color of your skin seems to show an underlying health condition, do you have a health problem?"
Well doc, if you consider the fact that she was a Mexican in this picture, and now, 78 years later she still appears to have a little pigment to her skin... I guess I wouldn't consider that a "underlying health problem" but a miracle.
In the doc's defense she had no way of knowing about this picture of a little not so spanish girl on her front porch smiling at her mom and dad.
HAPPY 79th BIRTHDAY to the best mom, mother-in-law, friend, sister, gramma, great gramma, child of God - in the whole wide world...
even Mexico!

Carol and Du go to Hawaii (and forgot me)
So, Carol and Du go to Hawaii and we all stay in Minnesota to enjoy the end of February in style. I guess I am not jealous at all...
why would I be...
80 degree days, beautiful beaches, sunshine, flipflops, shortsleeves...
doesn't bother me at all! Us true Minnesotans that stay here all winter will have our day soon. And I see by this picture that you were thinking of me while you were gone!
What more can I ask for (besides a free dinner in this restaurant!)
Seriously,
So happy you got to go and enjoy each others company in the beautiful Hawaii -
and "hang loose" together!

Heavens door
In 1994 we gave our Lindsey Kay a book written by Dolly Parton titled "The Coat of Many Colors". It is a beautifully illustrated story of a poor family living in Gods love. Dolly also wrote a song for the coat of many colors her momma made for her.
Around this same time a friend who I worked with was taking care of her aunt in her home. At times she would need someone to come and stay with her. Emily was old enough that she could do this and she seemed to enjoy this time with Verna. She was bed bound by now, many times Emily would just lay with her on the bed...
the silence shared between them -
age spaced by almost 82 years -
seemed to be what they both needed.
Verna was a seamstress in her day. She sewed for a lot of wealthy people. These people would bring her beautiful expensive material, and Verna would sew it into something exquisite for them. The scraps of material she would get to keep for herself. Verna made herself a wonderful jacket out of these scraps of material. She embroidered between each piece and lined it in green silk. When Verna went to be with the Lord, I inherited her "coat of many colors".
Around this time Dolly Parton started a book club where she encouraged reading to all the classes in elementary school. I don't remember alot about it - but, I know I started reading her book to Lindsey's class, then Lacey's class, and then classes that I didn't even know the kids. I enjoyed it, each time wearing the coat and sharing Verna's story also.
On January 31st, 2013 I once again got out our book and coat, and off to Foley, Mn. Grams and I went. We started out the day reading "Coat of Many Colors" to all the Kindergartner's at Foley Elementary. It was two groups of kids. Then we went to Conner's school and I read the story to his class also giving them a color page of "Joseph and the amazing coat of many colors". Next we had dinner with Conner and his class. It consisted of hot dogs wrapped in tortilla shells - I was quite impressed! Now it was time to head back to the Foley Falcons and watch JaciAnna perform in her winter concert with her class. She sang her heart out, knowing each and every word of every song. Then she got to play an instrument. It was comparable to a drum, and she looked just like her momma as she played it to the perfect rhythm of the song. It was a very proud moment to see her preform in front of so many people. She did it effortlessly and with the grace of a true musician.
It is one of the highlights of my story, to remember my little angle singing and playing in the choir. I have a picture of her from this day also - but, I haven't been able to get it on here yet ... it is coming soon!
Another highlight of this story?
When the first class of Kindergartner's game into the reading room there was about 40 of them. They all sat excitedly on the reading rug. I started talking to them and asked a few questions. One of the questions was if they knew anyone who could sew. I tried listening to each one. They were all so excited to share their story with me, to have me listen to them. Time was getting away on us and then... Mrs. Harren said "Grammie Pammie, you read your story and then we have a trick that we will show you when your done, it is away that you can listen to everyone" So, I read the story and then... Mrs. Harren said "Grammie Pammie, can you turn up your listening ears?" - (I took my hand and turned them over my ears, turning them up.)
then...
Mrs, Harren said "Now kids you turn down your voices to a whisper and you can all say at the same time what you want to tell Grammie Pammie"
I closed my eyes and listened...
what I heard is something that can never be explained. It was as if I could hear each voice. All of their voices together blended spiritually and I was transported to the door of Heaven.
I knew inside my soul that this is exactly what it sounds like in Heaven. I knew I was as close to Heaven as you can get while here on earth. As the Lord and Jesus listen to all of our concerns, our prayers He turns up his listening ears, He can decipher each voice and knows what we are saying.
Thank you Lord for this Blessing.
It is something I will never forget...

Chicken Feet
Out in the garage is a big ole black plastic bag. If someone where looking they would probably think it is garbage... or something that needs to be taken care of, it is laying by the door. Lacey got enough of them for a year she thinks. I guess the lady she got them from told her their isn't much of a call for them. She questions Lacey's age, wondering how she knows this stuff when so young.
I call Lacey and ask for the recipe for bone broth. She is my daughter of 25 years, but she knows how to make it - and I don't.
You take your bones and put them in the crock pot.
Cover with water
Add whatever you might like in your broth
celery left over veggies of any kind
garlic other seasonings to taste
carrots really anything you would like
asparagus
Take your chicken feet and cut off the toenails. (This will help the nutrients from the feet to leech into your broth)
Add the chicken feet to your crock pot.
Add approx 1 tbs. of apple cider vinegar mixing it around over your ingredients
Let sit for approx one hour.
Turn crock pot on high until liquid is hot.
Turn down to low and cook for 24 hours on low.
Strain
Put broth in glass bowl and refrigerate.
ENJOY!!!
Now take what is left in your beg ole black plastic bag.
Freeze them for the next pot of bone broth!
Okay - you are wondering what the heck is happening? Have I gone over the edge? Cooking chicken feet? Well, it is good for you so I am getting used to it.
Makes me think of my cinnamon flavored cod liver oil.
